What is Coaching?

Coaching is a process in which the coach supports the client in defining and accomplishing the goal the client wants to achieve. Each of us is different, so there is no formula for success that can be generally applied. Therefore, the purpose of coaching is to assist clients in finding their unique way and pace to reach their goals.

The fulfilment of our dreams and our well-being is not something that we want to let others be in charge of. Therefore, in coaching there is no room for counselling, mentoring or psychoanalysis. The client and the coach are partners in this process. The coach fully respects the client and listens to them carefully while assisting the client in reaching the goal. The coach is an interested but impartial observer who truly respects and believes in the client, knowing that the client has all the inner resources to be successful.

The role of the Client

In the coaching session, there is only one client, and this client is you. To see the change in our lives, we need to start changing ourselves as this is the fastest, the easiest and usually the only way to improve things.

Although it may seem beneficial to complain about other people’s behaviour in a friendly atmosphere, this will hardly impact your life. During the session, the coach is interested in the client only and supports the client to work on the areas that are under his/her control. e.g. we cannot make our colleagues behave the way we want but we can certainly take steps that can lead to a better atmosphere or better inner feeling in the working environment.

How the process goes…

Coaching starts with an introductory conversation (intake session) where the coach and the client meet each other and set the foundation for mutual work and cooperation. During this process, the client gets the picture of what the coaching sessions will look like and can decide if this is the right process for them.

The coach supports the client in defining long-term goals they will work on and the indicators of achievement that will help them track progress.

Setting the Goal

Having a specific goal is the basis of a coaching relationship and mutual work. The goal gives us direction to follow. It becomes clear if we compare this with driving from one destination to another. There is no point in starting your trip if you do not know where you are going.

Sometimes, during the coaching sessions, some new things reveal to the client and become more evident, leading to a new goal or reformulation of the previous one. Also, each session has its own goal that, in the end, will lead to fulfilling the long-term goal.

The coach and the client agree on their work dynamics that suits client’s needs. Usually, each coaching session lasts around 45 minutes; however, it can be shorter or longer (up to an hour). Sessions can be held every 1-2 weeks but even in a wider range between them. If the client decides to continue with the coaching after the intake session, the client usually continues with 6 to 12 sessions.

TRUST

Trust is the foundation of the coach-client relationship. All the information that client shared with the coach during the session is completely confidential.
